How Do I Find My Lost Pet?
Connect
Share pictures of your missing pet with your neighbors, on social media, in neighborhood groups, and in missing pet groups. Post on Petco Love Lost and set up a Pawboost Missing Pet Alert.
Walk
Grab your dog’s leash and start walking around the neighborhood. Be sure to bring some enticing treats and a bag to crinkle to get their attention.
Next Steps
Contact local animal services, share a photo of your missing pet, and share contact information. Confirm microchip information is up to date. Place large, brightly colored posters near the area where they disappeared – be sure to include contact information and a clear photo.
What If I Find A Dog?
IDENTIFY: Check for a collar, tag, or any information to reach an owner. Walk around the neighborhood to see if anyone recognizes the dog. Have the nearest veterinarian do a free microchip scan.
CONNECT: Take a photo and share with your neighbors, on social media, in neighborhood groups, and in lost and found pet groups. Upload to Petco Love Lost and Pawboost Missing Pet Alert. Check local missing pet sites to see is someone is looking for the pet.
What If I Find a Cat?
If the cat is healthy, it could be an owned outdoor cat or a community cat. Take a photo and share with your neighbors, on social media, and in neighborhood groups.
If the cat is injured, sick, or malnourished, take them to a veterinarian, complete a surrender request form, or take them to your county shelter. If it is not sick or injured, do not move it or take it into your home.
The best solution for community cats is Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) – in which the cat is spayed or neutered and returned to their familiar environment. Little Victories cannot accept feral cats into our Cat House.
What If I Find Kittens?
If the kittens appear healthy, clean, warm, and well nourished, their best chance of survival is to stay put and wait for mom to return. Make sure the kittens are in a safe nesting space and wait from a distance to see if momma returns.
Kittens should be removed from their nesting place if the mother cat does not return after six or more hours or if they appear dirty, cold, underweight or sick. In this case, you can complete a surrender request form, take the kittens to your county shelter, or explore our Other Shelter & Rescue Resources.
