Sanctuary Sweethearts Info

elton02aOur Sanctuary Sweethearts are animals that either have been with us a very long time or who are older dogs and cats. We also have some Sanctuary Sweethearts who have handicaps such as blindness or have illnesses which might require medication or special diet or care.

ALMOST ALL OF OUR SANCTUARY SWEETHEARTS ARE ADOPTABLE!!

However, when these animals are adopted some --not all--of them will have to be adopted into special homes. Each animal's story is written with its picture so that you have a chance to get to know them. We try to see every animal here as individuals with their own personalities. However, ALL of them do require the same things as far as food, shelter, vet care, and maintenance such as flea preventive.

The cost to maintain a dog at the shelter is approximately $100-$150 a month for care given by shelter employees, flea and heart worm preventive, food, treats, and occasional toys. Each dog also must also  have yearly booster shots and must be treated if they develop an illness or injury (such as an eye infection, cut, etc.)

If you see a heart at the beginning of an animal's story on this page, you'll know this is a special needs animal that requires special care and attention

WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY OR YOUR BUSINESS TO SPONSOR A DOG OR CAT THAT HAS NO BELOVED FAMILY OF ITS OWN. You can "virtually" adopt one of these animals --help us provide for it--and even visit occasionally if you like.  But, we don't expect one person or family to carry the entire cost of one animal.  We can pool resources and have three people, families, or businesses sponsor the same pet helping to reduce the cost of each monthly sponsorship.

Sponsorships will be $50 per month. You, your family, or your business can set up a recurring payment of $50 on our Donations Page or pay a one-time fee of $300 for 6 months or $600 for one year.  Either way, make sure to use the drop-down menu under "Campaigns" and choose Sanctuary Sweethearts.  Then, put the name of the animal you want to sponsor in the comments box.

If you choose to do a $50 per month recurring payment, we ask that you commit to at least six months since we will be making changes to our records, making purchases for the animals, and sending you updates about the pet you've chosen to sponsor.

We would also like to list you as one of the animal's sponsors and even put pictures of you, your family, your company logo, or your business employees in the article with the dog or cat you choose to help
.
You can become a hero to an animal who has no one to speak for him. You can help insure that this animal has a happy life no matter where he lives his days.

If you have chosen to sponsor an animal and have set up payment through our donations module to the right of this page, you are welcome to send us an email with a picture and description of the individual(s) that are helping to sponsor the animal.  Make sure the picture is at least 800 pixels on the long side so we have enough room to crop and re-size to fit in the article.

We ask for just one picture per sponsorship.  We are allowing 3 sponsors per animal, thus we will potentially need to put 3 sponsor pictures and descriptions with each animal.

Bonnie

bonnie02aBonnie was found tied to a drug house and brought to us by the police. Obviously, she did not make a good guard dog because the policeman loved her and wanted her safe. She was starved, though, and needed to be spayed and fed. Bonnie loves people!! She is often sad because she would give anything to be in a home of her own, to live out her life with what she desires most--her own human. She is one of the sweetest dogs we have but has been with us almost four years, probably because she is a pit or part pit. But we have found that our pits have never attempted to bite a human when they are adopted out and become great pets. Sometimes there are pits who do not like other dogs, but that might be because she was tied up and hurt by roving dogs and could not defend herself. She has made great strides though because she walks and plays with other dogs now. My own dogs does not like other dogs but is a great dog--they love their humans more than life.

Elton

elton02aElton  (named for Elton John) is a product of hoarding and neglect. He came to us very traumatized, very scared.  For months he hid under his cottage and ran from everyone.  We thought he would improve, but time was not his friend.  Finally, we had the vet come and give him a shot (on a long stick) and put him to sleep temporarily.  He got shots, flea treatment, and most important--a collar and leash.  When he woke up, we moved him into a kennel where he could not hide.  After that he was brushed, walked by many different volunteers, and has learned that many people are kind.  He is ready to adopt, but he needs a special home where he will be treated with patience and love till he adjusts and becomes comfortable. He would prefer to be the only dog, but might like a female playmate!!!

Frisbee

frisbee02afrisbee01aFrisbee was brought to us about two years ago. She is about six or seven years old. Her family was going to put her down if we did not take her. Because she had not been socialized with people other than her family, she was terrified of her new surroundings. She growled and ran and acted very terrified. Eventually our people were allowed to go in and clean her kennel....they kept working with her, giving treats, etc., till she finally allowed our staff to walk her. Now she is even being walked by volunteers because she has come to accept that there are a lot of people in her life.

Hero

hero02aHero was found chained on a heavy short chain to a building. He was fostered for a while but then was brought to the farm. He can literally climb or jump almost any fence. Therefore , he would have to be walked on a leash or kept inside. We even built the new play field with a fence with arms and wire on top and he managed to get out in ten minutes.

Hero likes people he knows, but must make friends first. He can also have disagreements with his kennel mates, so he is usually kenneled alone. Hero is probably one of those dogs we will keep forever, so it would be great to build him a larger kennel where he can run more and play. That is one of the things we plan, when we have the money.

Iris

iris01aIris actually came to Little Victories as a puppy.  Because of her big stature, she looks imtimidating, but her bright eyes will tell you she is still a baby at heart--she loves petting, playing, other dogs, walks, toys, food, and just about everything!!!

Iris is about four years old. It is time she found her own home, but black dogs and dogs that look like pits are often overlooked. Won't you please help Iris? She loves toys and would like more and more--still a young dog, she loves to play!! If you visit, she loves going to the play field and getting petted.

Iris' mother, Hazel, is also at the farm. They kennel together and snuggle when it is cold. They have been the best dogs--they are happy with anything and evrything they are given. These humble dogs deserve the best. Won't you consider adopting or sponsoring them?

RobinDickAshDick and Robin Ash, and their dog, Angel, (shown here at LV Walk and Wag) are the new sponsors of Iris, one of our long term Sanctuary Sweethearts.

Dick and Robin Ash decided to sponsor Iris who is one of our Sanctuary Sweethearts. She has been at the farm since she was a puppy. Because she is larger, and black, it means she is one of those dogs people shy away from--but she is as sweet as she can be. The money sponsors donate will help build bigger runs, give them toys, and help provide a better life for the animals who stay here for a while!!

Make sure you find Iris and put her on the site and then put them on there with them.

Marley

marley01aMarley is part boxer and probably part mastiff or some other large breed, perhaps even a lab or hound. He has the red coloring of a boxer. He is a good boy with people but does have some problems occasionally with other dogs. Marley would have to be the only dog in a home. Children should be over 12 as he is bigger.

Marley has a loving nature, letting all the volunteers and staff walk him. He is happy when walking or playing in the play field. Of course, he loves treats and toys! Marley would like to have long walks and have someone pet him and talk to him. He is about three or four years old, still a younger dog, so playing fetch or even running with him would be great.

Rocky

rocky02arocky01aRocky was severely beaten and traumatized before he arrived at our shelter as a half grown pup.  He never forgot.  He has made great strides in becoming friendly with the staff and regular volunteers. He also LOVES other dogs--and he is a gentleman with the females!!   He loves having a kennel mate and playing in the play field with several dogs. He would be great in a quiet home where he can bond with the person.  Rocky has been with us about four years. He is a great boy and we love him!  He also loves treats and toys --in that order and minds very well when he is out.

Spudz

spudz01aSpudz came to us as a puppy. They had sarcoptic mange and were treated for four months. During that time they were quarantined and became rather shy. He has more than come out of that though, and loves dogs, people and just about everything. Spudz is about four years old. Spudz is a happy dog, as you can see by his face. He likes nothing better than playing with other dogs, taking long walks, and sleeping in the sun.

Spudz would make a great pet and is highly adoptable. He is house trained and does not bark and make a lot of noise. He would also like being with other dogs and would like snuggling on the couch.

Waldo

waldoaWaldo has been with us for about four years. Waldo is a beautiful chocolate color with white speckled feet. With his ears up, he has a fox like face. He is a beautiful dog and about thirty pounds, the perfect size. Waldo kennels with another dog, loves to play, and likes going to the play yard.  He LOVES walks and toys, but is kind of leery of strangers with anything new--like an object in your hand. You have to show it to him and let him see what it is. He was probably abused and dogs--like elephants--don't forget.

Waldo is one of my favorites. I think he would make a great companion if the person (s) were patient and kind and let him get adjusted to his new home. He has always liked people and kennels with another dog.
